New Restaurants Coming to Fayetteville (April, 2013)
Demolition of an existing building at 1513 Martin Luther King Jr is now completed. New construction which should take between 100 and 125 days will take place soon after. The new tenant? Andy's Frozen Custard. The business should start just at the right time when temperatures reach triple digits in August. There was an Andy's on College Avenue which closed. The new operation will be about 1,600 SF and feature a sit-down dining area, a drive-through and walk-up order windows. Andy's has 17 locations nationwide, of which 11 are corporate stores.
Gold Town LLC recently bought the property at 3223 N College Ave, next to Zaxby's. The 3,039 SF building will be renovated into a sushi and Korean barbecue restaurant. According the Sin Tuk Kim of Gold Town, this will be his second restaurant in northwest Arkansas.
Scott Bowman, owner of Theo's, East Side Grill, and Union Kitchen inside The Chancellor Hotel, plans to open Deluxe Burger at 550 W Dickson St., which recently was home to Rowdy Beaver. The fast-casual dining restaurant will feature gourmet hamburgers, shakes, malts, and other items. Expected opening date is August, 2013.
A new Vietnamese restaurant called Spring Rolls Bistro will occupy the space formerly occupied by Cherry Berry Frozen Yogurt at 745 E Joyce Blvd.
Meanwhile in the Wedington Corridor, the area will see a new Mexican restaurant, Matador Mexican Grill & Bar, opening in the former Bariola's Pizza space at 1290 N Steamboat Drive.
The Yacht Club located on College Ave will soon see two new food trucks. Lo's Sweet Treats and Other Eats will offer grilled cheese sandwiches and cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts beginning May 7th. Its owner is Lauren French. Loofie's Gelato will serve gelato, quiche, and other sweet treats.
Fayetteville Companies Gets Investments (April, 2013)
Field Agent, a Fayetteville-based company, received $2.5 million investment from Five Elms Capital of Kansas City, Kansas, recently. The company specializes in mobile research and retail data collection. Its customers are mainly consumer packaged goods companies and retailers. The firm plans to use the funds to expand into other industries such as real estate and restaurants. The company currently has 20 employees in Fayetteville and will probably add 10 more by the end of the year and another 15 throughout the US. Field Agent has about 50 employees worldwide and operates in countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Norway and Finland. About 240,000 "shoppers" have downloaded the app and use it to "mystery shop," audit promotional displays and perform other services much faster and at a far lower cost than traditional providers can.
Another Fayetteville e-commerce company, Acumen Brands, has received an $83 million investment from General Atlantic of New York. This is likely one of 10 largest capital-backed deals in the US this year. The company has moved from its 50,000 SF warehouse to a 200,000 SF facility in Fayetteville. Acumen Brands employs about 150 people and uses 30 Kiva robots to fill orders. It plans to add dozens more new employees and 20-30 additional robots thanks to this investment.
Orchestro Launches Retail Industry's First Science Network (April, 2013)
Orchestro, a leading data technology company, has brought together 12 of the top retail and supply chain experts from the world of academia to further research on retail and consumer packaged goods. Orchestro formed the Orchestro Science Network to find solutions to address the challenges faced by the consumer goods industry. The company's headquarters are in northern Virginia but half of its employees work from its Center of Excellence in northwest Arkansas.
The network will be chaired by Matt Waller who is the chief scientist at Orchestro. He also holds the Garrison Endowed Chair in Supply Chain Management in the Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, which Orchestro hailed as the epicenter of retail supply chain research. The researchers will have access to real-world big data challenges and will work to find algorithms to predict things like on-shelf availability, promotion success and new product introduction.
Fayetteville School District Recognized as Green Ribbon School (April, 2013)
The US Department of Education awarded the Fayetteville School District with the Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Award recently. The District is the first in Arkansas to receive such an honor and one of 14 announced nationwide by Secretary Arne Duncan. The districts were selected for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and green career pathways. The district hired its first education sustainability coordinator, Dana Smith, a year ago. Ms. Smith led efforts with the Farm to School nutrition program, community and school gardens, the High School Green Team recycling program and energy audits in the school buildings.
U of A Community Design Center's Design Work Recognized (February, 2013)
The Pettaway Neighborhood design project in Little Rock received an Honor Award for Regional & Urban Design from the American Institute of Architects this year. The Fayetteville-based University of Arkansas Community Design Center was commisstioned by the Downtown Little Rock CDC to do this project. Prelimianary development cost estimates range between $1.1 million to $1.3 milion. The site plan for the vacant, 1-acre parcel along the east side of Rock Street between 17th & 19th streets is laid out to accommodate nine modern homes built around a common area and playground. Pooling the public-private-non profit players and amassing the needed funds is expected to begin in earnest in the coming months.
Academy Sports Opens in Fayetteville (December, 2012)
Academy Sports & Outdoors officially open for business in Fayetteville December 7th. The Fayetteville store is 71,000 SF and is at 3864 N Steele Blvd, just south of the Malco Razorback Theater at Joyce and Steele Boulevards. The store employs approximately 150 people. The store has an archery lane and a digital golf simulator and provides services such as assembly and delivery, hunting and fishing licenses, scope mounting, bore sighting, line winding/spooling, propane exchange and racket stringing. Academy Sports & Outdoors is based in Katy, Texas, and has 154 stores in 13 states. It has 6 stores including Fayetteville's in Arkansas.
Work To Start In January '13 for the "Flyover" Expressway Bridge (November, 2012)
Fayetteville city officials announced that construction of a flyover bridge linking northbound College Avenue to the Fullbright Expressway will begin in January next year. The connection could be completed by mid-2014. Design and engineering on the project have already been completed. The construction and management contracts together with an agreement between the city adnd SourceGas to relocate a gasoline main will cost almost $7.5 million. The city will pay $1.41 million of the construction and management contracts. Federal highway dollars will cover the remaining 80% of the costs. The city and SourceGas will split the $113,000 relocation cost 50/50.
Walton Arts Center Expanding (November, 2012)
Walton Arts Center's leaders announced the expansion of the existing building's footprint to add more office, performance and event space. Terri Trotter, the WAC's COO, said the expansion project is expected to add about 30,000 SF to the building at a cost of about $20 million. The goal is to have the work completed in 2015. The expansion will allow WAC to bring in bigger shows like touring Broadway musicals and frees up the Starr Theater which now is sometimes used as a dressing room or storage space when big shows come to town. The additional meeting and event space will be a boon for event planners. in addition to this expansion, construction is expected to start next fall on renovations to the Old Field House on the UA campus. The project will transform the building into a 650-seat performance hall.
Three Start Ups Win Big on Demo Day (November, 2012)
Three tech startup companies won $150,000 each in additional investments during the ARK Challenge Demo Day held at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. The Challenge originally called for two winners but Governor Mike Beebe surprised the crowd in attendance by announcing a third winner that would gain the funding. The winners were MineWhat, a company that helps e-commerce sites draw customers in and keep them engaged and returning; Btiques, a site which helps independent boutiques sell product on mobile devices and through social media; and StackSearch, which optimizes product services on web-sites. The two owners of MineWhat are from India and they have decided to base their company in Fayetteville. The ARK Challenge is a program where for this year, 15 companies were selected from a field of over 80 applications from across the nation and internationally to move to Fayetteville for 14 weeks of boot-camp training to bring their concepts to commercialization and a chance to win additional funding. Each selected company received $3,330 to cover cost-of-living expenses in NWA and a $15,000 investment in their companies in exchange for a 6% equity stake.
U of A Trustees Approve New UA Buildings (September, 2012)
The U of A board of trustees recently approved several academic and athletic facilities for the U of A at Fayetteville.
a) A general purpose classroom and laboratory building which cost between $18 and $25 million will be funded largely through a $1.25 million annual transfer from the U of A athletics program.
b) Conversion of the Old Field House into a 650-700 seat performing arts center named for Jim and Joyce Faulkner, a Little Rock alumni couple who contributed $6 million to the project. This estimated $17.5 million project will be financed through U of A reserves, additional private gifts and student facilities fees.
c) Three athletics projects which will be funded by gifts and sports revenues include a $20-25 million, 70,000-85,000 SF basketball practice facility which will include separate men's and women's gyms; an $18-23 million, 47,000-58,000 SF academic and dining facility for student athletics that will include tutorial rooms, group study rooms, a computer lab and math, learning labs, a 500-seat auditorium, a dining hall for athletes, a full service kitchen and staff offices; and a $7.75-9.625 million, 40,000-45,000 SF baseball and track indoor training facility to be attached to the existing Randal Tyson Track Center.
The U of A Set To Open Research Facility to House RFID Technology (August, 2012)
The U of A at Fayetteville is opening its third and largest research facility for radio frequency identification which is used in retail inventory tracking and other asset management. RFID deploys wireless tags that transmit data to a receiver to trace products through the supply chain. The new, 20,000 SF facility will be located at 1637 Fred Hanna Drive in Fayetteville. A grand opening is scheduled for September 11th. According to Mark Roberti, founder and editor of RFID Journal, much of the focus for RFID deployment in recent years has shifted from tracking cases and pallets of products to tracking individual items. As a result, RFID can improve inventory accuracy. For example, inventory accuracy in apparel is typically about 65%. What retailers have found is that if they use RFID, the accuracy may increase to 99% or better.
The Chancellor Is Having Its Grand Opening (August, 2012)
The Chancellor is just weeks away from its grand opening on Thursday, September 13th. The hotel first opened in 1981 and is owned by Southwind Hospitality Holdings LLC, a group led by Ike Thrash from Mississippi and Sam Alley of Little Rock. The group bought it for $3.8 million and started to refurbished the property. The Chancellor will now have 191 rooms and 16 luxury suites. With 207 rooms, the hotel is the second largest property in the area, behind only the 400-room Embassy Suites NWA in Rogers. There will be about 100 full time employees. The hotel will have a restaurant and bar/lounge called Union and Scott Bowman, owner of Theo's in Fayetteville and Rogers, is the proprietor. The Union may sit up to 120 guests. The Event Group of Fayetteville will head the hotel's catering efforts.
Metro Collision Center Sold (August, 2012)
A 17,600 SF industrial property located at 1895 MLK Blvd. was sold for $1.3 million. CB Realty Corp, led by E Fletcher Lord Jr. of Little Rock was the buyer while Tracy Hoskins, managing member of Metro Collision Center was the seller. The one-story building was built in 1990 and sits on 1.34 acres. Lord is the CEO of Replacement Parts Inc. of Little Rock. The company is once of the largest privately held aftermarket auto parts operations in the country with 160 stores in six states. The company also owns a 6,000 SF auto parts store, known as The Parts Store, at 1513 MLK Blvd. It will move to the new location after remodeling is completed. The new store will operate under the Bumper to Bumper flag.
Superior Industries Plans Factory Improvement (August, 2012)
Superior Industries plans to spend up to $30 million on capital improvements this year, with a large portion going into local plants. The Van Nuys, California-based company has two US operations which are located in Fayetteville and Rogers, Arkansas. The automotive aluminum-wheel manufacturer has three additional factories in Mexico and they make wheels primarily for Chrysler, Ford, Toyota and General Motors. Improvements will primarily be in upgrading equipment and streamlining some operations. Employment at the US plants is steady at almost 1,500.
Fayetteville Company, Delta Electronics, To Add Up To 50 New Jobs (July, 2012)
Delta Group Electronics Inc., headquartered in Albuquerque, NM, announced that its workforce at its Fayetteville plant could double to 100 after it was chosen as the manufacturer of Alternative Hydrogen Solutions' (AHS) fuel-saving and emissions-reducing systems. AHS is a joint venture between Highline Technical Innovations Inc. (HTII) and AHS Sales and Marketing LLC of Miami. HTII created a system known as Hy-Impact that increases the efficiency of internal-combustion engines. Products marketed under the Hy-Impact line include Hy-RoadT for trucking, Hy-MarineT for maritime applications and HyRailT for locomotives.
Air Filter Plant to Add 58 Jobs in Fayetteville (July, 2012)
American Air Filter Co., of Louisville announced plans to expand its manufacturing plant in Fayetteville. This expansion will add 58 new jobs and new investments to the facility. The plant currently employs 112 people and manufactures panel and pleated air filters. AAF International employs more than 3,000 people in 22 manufacturing facilities and five research and development centers globally. It produces air filtration solutions for commercial, industrail, transportation and nuclear power applications.
Chancellor Hotel to Open September 14 (June, 2012)
The formerly Cosmopolitan Hotel will open as Chancellor Hotel on September 14, according to the new owners. The hotel underwent renovations which included replacement and updating of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The renovated hotel will have a 14,000 sf conference center and will feature 16 suites and 191 rooms. The hotel is a joint venture project of Bedrock Commercial Partners, owned by the Sam Alley family of Little Rock and Dawn Properties of Hattisburg, MS, headed by President Ike Thrash. Prima Hospitality LLC of Tubac, AZ, owned by Richard Dunkelberger, will operate the hotel. The hotel had in the past operated under the Hilton and Radisson flags.
Fayetteville's Aldermen Approve Project Cleveland, a Student Housing Project (June, 2012)
City aldermen approved zoning and development plans for Project Cleveland, a 122-unit and 450-bedroom apartment complex. The complex will be located near University of Arkasnas dormitories and Leverett Elementary School. Seth Mims, a partner with Springdale-based Specialized Real Estate Group, hopes the development will open in Fall 2014. It will be at the northwest corner of North Hall Avenue and West Cleveland Street.
Fayetteville High School Continues Additional Renovations (June 2012)
Fayetteville High School students will return to new facilities when school starts August 20th. The High School continues its transformation with significant work on its athletics facilities on and off campus. The School is building a $1.23 million tennis complex adjacent to Asbell Elementary School. Another $4.4. million will be spent on the Bulldog Athletic and Recreation Complex. Harmon Field will have a new turf costing $682,000 and another $1.4 million spent on the District track. These new athletic facilities is financed by second-lien bonds the district sold several months ago.
Twin Arch Motel to Become Apartments and George's Majestic Lounge to Undergo Renovations (June, 2012)
The old Twin Arch Motel located at 521 N College Ane will be converted into nine studio apartments to be marketed toward University of Arkansas students and young professionals. Garrison Roddey and Tom Harding, partners with Rogers-based Community Development Partners will be the lead persons for this project. Construction on this 0.37 acre property is expected to begin in August.
Meanwhile, George's Majestic Lounge, a business located on Dickson St., will undergo its first major renovations since 1989. The concert venue's owner, Brian Crowne, plans to replace a construction trailer with a roughly 1,000 SF building. The building will add backstage space for bands, raise the stage and add a climate-controlled garden area. Crowne hopes to have all the renovations completed by early August.
VA Hospital in Fayetteville to Fill 100 Jobs (April, 2012)
The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks will hire 100 workers to support the soon-to-be completed 144,000 SF addition on its College Avenue campus in Fayetteville. The System is currently recruiting half of the available positions. The remaining jobs will be announced this summer with hiring completed in the fall. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall. The VA is hiring nurses, medical technologists, housekeepers, mechanics, and carpenters to staff outpatient services at the new building. The $93 million facility will offer pharmacy, optometry, orthopedics, and gastroenterology services, among others. The VA in NWA employs about 1,200 people to serve veterans in 23 counties in NWA, southwest Missouri, and eastern Oklahoma.
Mattress Firm Occupies Former Circuit City (April 2012)
Mattress Firm opened a store at 744 E Joyce Blvd in the former Circuit City building. The 20,716 SF building is home to the mattress company's fourth Arkansas store with two in Little Rock and one in Bryant. Mattress Firm has more than 700 stores in 23 states. Mattress Firm stores feature more than 55 different models of mattresses from manufacturers such as Sealy, Simmons, and Tempur-Pedic. An investment group from Atlanta purchased the building last June.
Team from Walton College of Business Won First Place (April 2012)
Students from Sam M Walton College of Business won first place in the Intermodal Association of North America Logistics and Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Case Competition. Amanda Hancock, Alexander Marshall, Kristie Spielmaker and Sam Stevenson were accompanied by Christian Hofer, faculty sponsor. There were seven other collegiate teams. Teams had 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes to answer judges' questions.
City Planning Commission OKs Student Housing Complex (March, 2012)
City Planning Commission approved a 180-unit hilltop development geared towards the U of A's growing student population. The Vue will be a 656-bedroom complex to be built on Paris Avenue south of MLK Blvd overlooking the Fayetteville High School. The developer is Houston-based Park Green Properties. Park Green Properties is partnering with New Jersey-based University Student Living. Construction is expectetd to begin between May and June 2012 and will take about a year to complete. The two- and four-bedroom apartments will be ready for occupancy in August 2013. The development will be a combination of five-story podium building with parking underneath and three-story townhomes. The site is 19 acre in size.
Liberty Bank Groundbreaking (March, 2012)
Liberty Bank had its groundbreaking ceremony in Fayetteville recently for a two-story, 22,000 SF flagship building near the intersection of Joyce Blvd and Vantage Dr. The new bank will be the largest of the Liberty Banks in the state and will house the region's administration, mortgage loan department and operations, and provide customer service for accounts, loans, investments and insurance needs. Construction is expected to be completed by November 2013. Howard R. Hamilton, the northwest regional president and chief operating officer, said the new center shows the bank's commitment to its customers in northwest Arkansas. Liberty Bank has 45 centers throughout Arkansas, including 10 locations in Northwest Arkansas. and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Bancshares Inc. with assets in excess of $2.8 billion. The new center will employ 35 people.
Arvest Bank of Fayetteville Applies to Relocate Branch in Fayetteville (March, 2012)
Arvest Bank of Fayetteville has filed applications with state regulators for permission to relocate its existing branch to a new location. The Green Acres branch at Poplar and College Ave in Fayetteville will be relocated to College and Township. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start middle of 2012 for completion sometime in 2013.
Hotel Changed Hands (March, 2012)
Nitesh Gandhi, president of Manav Investor of NW Arkansas Inc. is now the new owner of an 83-room hotel in Fayetteville. Gandhi paid $1.4 million for the Fayetteville Super 8 at 1075 S Shiloh Dr. The seller was Supertel LP of Virginia, formerly Humphrey Hospitality LP. The 1.44 acre development and building, constructed in 1993, appraised for $1.57 million in 2011.
Area Agency on Aging Breaks Ground (March, 2012)
Area Agency on Aging broke ground on a new location in Fayetteville. The new 4,980 SF office building to be constructed for $557,760 is located at 4332 N Waterside Court. The new branch office, expected to be completed in July 2012, will house 10-12 staff members. It will replace the agency's current office building, a 2,360 SF space located at 2325 Green Acres Rd. Area Agency on Aging Northwest Arkansas Inc. acquired the land from Zion Holdings LLC in June 2011 for $185,000.
Academy Sports + Outdoors Coming Soon to Fayetteville (March, 2012)
Academy Sports + Outdoors could soon has its second store in northwest Arkansas. The sporting goods retailer has recently signed a letter of intent with developer Brent Mann of Houston's Vista Private Equity Group. Mann has a deal under contract to buy about 9 acres of land next door to Razorback Cinema in the Steele Creek area of uptown Fayetteville. If everything is in place, Mann's group will build the building and Academy will rent it from them. Academy currently has a store in Rogers, north of Fayetteville.
Block Avenue Buy (March, 2012)
Sam Mathias, through his Mathias Properties Inc., recently bought a 2,705 SF office building in downtown Fayetteville. Mathias paid $425,000 to Woodland Enterprises LLC for the building at 115 N Block Ave. The building is a one-story building built in 1970. It was last appraised in 2010 for $312,700.
US News & World Report Ranks Washington Regional Medical Center Among the Nation's Top Regional Hospitals (March, 2012)
The US News and World Report recently recognized Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville as among the nation's best regional hospitals. Two hundred and forty seven hospitals were selected by the magazine's editors for excellence in providing care to communities that are outside major metropolitan areas. According to the report, hospitals like Washington Regional Medical Center offers a high level of medical care to communities that otherwise might have limited options, and that they are fully capable of providing first-rate care. US News & World Report annually evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 differrent medical specialties, using factors such as death rates, patient safety, procedure volume and other objective data. It also considers physicians' responses to a national survey where they are asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases. In addition to this recognition, Washington Regional Medical Center was also named one of the nation's most-connected hospitals for achieving an advanced level of electronic medical record adoption. Washington Regional is the only community-owned, locally governed, not-for-profit hospital in the area.
New Bar Coming To Dickson Street (March, 2012)
The former Flying Possum site on Dickson Street will soon open as a Razorbacks-themed bar later this year. Sarah Varga, owner of Sideways and Ryleigh's on Dickson Street, and her husband, Christopher, signed a lease with the building's owner, the Pearson Family Trust, earlier this year. The couple plans to have the bar open for business this summer after renovation is completed. Sarah and her husband will overhaul the entire 1,647 SF building at 526 W Dickson.
Bruce Walker, known for his patented leather guitar straps and laid-back attitude, ran Flying Possum for 35 years before dying in a fire that heavily damaged the building on March 7, 2011.
UA Students Win Business Contest (March, 2012)
A team of graduate students from the University of Arkansas College of Business won first place in a business plan competition recently. The event sponsors were the University of Louisville and Brown-Forman Corp. Both organizations are located in Louisville, Ky. Twelve school-sponsored teams competed in the event held Feb. 17th and 18th. The winning team, SpatiaLink Solutions, won $15,000 and entry in another business plan competition in Austin. SpatiaLink Solutions' winning idea is a retailing product that seeks to limit the amount of sales lost because of out-of-stock items. Members of SpatiaLink's team are John Miller, Aaron Huffaker, Steve Fortner, Bethany Haefner and Nate Allen.
Carol Reeves, an associate vice provost for enterpreneurship and management professor at the UA, mentored the award-winning team. Since 2002, Reeves has advised 14 national, first-place winning teams, garnering $1.25 million in cash prizes.
cycleWood Solutions Selected as Finalist (February, 2012)
Cyclewood Solutions recently was selected as one of four finalists for the Association of University Technology Managers 2012 Venture Forum Business Plan Competition. The company now will compete March 16th in Anaheim, CA. A startup company, it offers a sustainable alternative to the single-use plastic bag. Its product is called a XyloBag and it is biodegradable. XyloBags are made from organic material that breaks down into humus in 150 days. According to the company, these bags can be made for as little as .15 cents each compared to conventional plastic bags that cost about 1.2 cents each. cycleWood Solution founders are Nhiem Cao, Kevin Oden, Priscilla Silva and Jack Avery. In addition to being a finalist for this competition, the company also was the south central region winner for the CleanTech Open in Austin, TX. The CleanTech Open is a competition for clean technology startup companies that address energy, environmental and economic challenges.
Startup Company Wins Plan Award (February, 2012)
A team of University of Arkansas students won the top prize at a Canada's premier graduate student business plan competition. The company created a plan that improves retention and success rate of adults preparing for the General Education Development test. The Learning DifferentiatED team was led by president and chief executive officer, Barry James, Brandon Hill, Senthil Raman, Brandon Wright, Murali Natarajah and Chris Cambridge. Barry James is a doctoral candidate in the microelectronics-photonics program. The company took the first place at the IBK Capital-Ivey Business Plan Competition. The University of Arkansas was one of 50 graduate schools in the US and Canada that took part in the competition. Finalists were invited to make their presentations at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. The university team won $20,000 for its first place finish and an automatic berth in the Venture Labs Investment Competition at the University of Texas where the team will compete for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes.
Fayetteville's Mail Processing Center to Stay (February, 2012)
The US Postal Services announced it will keep Fayetteville's mail processing center open and move some postal operations from Fort Smith and Harrison to this center. The move could possibly expand the number of postal jobs at the Fayetteville center. According to an agency study, six positions from the Harrison center and 35 positions from the Fort Smith facility will move to Fayetteville. The Fayetteville center in December last year was targeted to close and consolidate with a Little Rock facility.
UA To Buy Buildings (February, 2012)
The University of Arkansas will spend $6 million to purchase two buildings in north Fayetteville that would provide space for employees who either have been displaced by campus construction or whose jobs do not have to be on campus. The property is located at 1001 and 1083 E. Sain St. and consists of 9.34 acres. The property was formally owned by AW Realty, a subsidiary of Southwestern Energy, a Houston-based oil and natural gas producer. The office complex and its acreage is 4.5 miles north of the UA campus. The two buildings together have a total of 58,693 SF.
3 Monkeys Moving Back To Fayetteville (January, 2012)
3 Monkeys Children's Boutique, a retailer, is moving back to Fayetteville from Rogers after three years. Owner Amanda Hunt recently bought the former El Chico at 3854 Front St. in Fayetteville fir $510,000. The building has a 6,000 SF space and the owner hopes to have the store open in February. The retailer has a loyal client base in both counties but ultimately favored the Fayetteville location.
UA Epley Center for Health Professions Opens (January, 2012)
The $10.84 million Epley Center for Health Professions opened earlier this month on the northwest corner of the UA Fayetteville campus. The Epley Center houses the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing and the communication disorders program, which operates the UA Speech and Hearing Clinic. The 19,700 SF former student health center building was renovated and another 24,300 SF of new space was added on. The building is named for Lewis Epley, a longtime donor to the university and a former UA System trustee, and his wife, Donna. The Center has two classrooms that each seat 50, a 60-seat computer lab, two student lounges, a faculty lounge, break area, and large meeting rooms. The school has 240 students enrolled this fall. Another 654 students identified themselves as pre-nursing students.
Commission Approves Apartments (January, 2012)
Fayetteville's Planning Commission gave approval to the second of two large-scale development requests from a team of Springdale developers. The projects will add more than 1,200 bedrooms in downtown Fayetteville. Eco Downtown, a 250-unit apartment complex, would be located south of Lafayette Street between West and Campbell Avenues. Currently, the property has an activity center and a parking lot for the University Baptist Church. Both Eco Downtown and 555 Maple, a similar development, are intended to provide pedestrian-friendly living options for people seeking the urban experience, according to Seth Mims, a partner with MC3 Multifamily, the developer. The 183-unit 555 Maple project is located northwest of Eco Downtown where there are two rental properties, a boarded-up church and the Maple Street Apartments are located.
Tyson Adds Jobs At Plant (January, 2012)
Tyson Foods announced the creation of 60 new manufacturing jobs for its Mexican Original tortilla plant expansion. The plant expects to open two new lines by the end of the month. The plant's 500 workers produce tortillas and chips for quick service Mexican food chains such as Taco Bell. The expansion cost an estimated $7 million and it included renovation of 120,000 SF space with new equipment installation, according to Tyson. The new jobs will pay between $11 and $12 an hour with benefits such as health insurance, paid holidays and retirement plans.
Company To Lease Airport Space (January, 2012)
Darryl Riddell, a south-east Arkansas businessman, is leasing the largest hangar in Fayetteville Executive Airport. The roughly 17,000 SF building is currently vacant. Riddell who owns South Delta Aviation in Helena-West Helena plans to move the bulk of his aircraft sales operation to Fayetteville to be closer to his two grown children. His company buys, repairs, and sells aircraft. He would likely hire 2-3 employees and may expand his business in Fayetteville. The lease will be $3,000 per month for two years and is effective June 1. The Airport still has one large hangar and four smaller T-Hangars available for lease.
Super 8 Changes Hands (January, 2012)
Manav Investors of Northwest Arkansas recently bought Super 8 in Fayetteville. Kalpesh Gandhi bought the motel from Supertel Hospitality. Mumford Company of Newport News, VA, brokered the sale. The motel has 83 rooms and is at the intersection of I-540 and US 62. Gandhi owns several hotels throughout Arkansas and Oklahoma. Local bank financing was used to facilitate the transaction. Gandhi will retain the Super 8 franchise after cosmetic renovations.
